Psychotherapy & Counselling

Psychotherapy and counselling are terms used for two important approaches for treating mental health challenges by talking with a qualified psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health practitioners.

Counselling, which is also known as talk therapy, consists of a single conversation or a series of conversations, taking place between a psychologist and his client. It is a broadly used term in psychiatry, which goes hand in hand with treatments used for the enhancement of mental health.

Psychotherapy, in contrast, is an evolutionary procedure which will support the client to develop a rational and clear vision about his long-standing attitudes, recurrent emotions, ways of thinking, behaviour, and personality, which might have resulted in current issues, in the quality of life and relationships with others.

During psychotherapy, you learn about your condition and your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Psychotherapy helps you learn how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.

Psychotherapy helps with a number of life’s stresses and conflicts that can affect anyone. For example, it may help you:

  • Resolve conflictswith your partner or someone else in your life
  • Relieve anxiety or stressdue to work or other situations
  • Cope with major life changes, such as divorce, the death of a loved one or the loss of a job
  • Learn to manage unhealthy reactions, such as road rage or passive-aggressive behavior
  • Come to terms with an ongoing or serious physical health problem, such as diabetes, cancer or long-term (chronic) pain
  • Recover from physical or sexual abuseor witnessing violence
  • Cope with sexual problems, whether they’re due to a physical or psychological cause
  • Sleep better

There are many types of psychotherapy, each with its own approach. The type of psychotherapy that’s right for you depends on your individual situation.

Employee Assistance Programmes

Employee Assistance Programmes are employer-sponsored work-based interventions designed to identify and assist employees in resolving personal problems that may be adversely affecting their performance at work.

These problems may vary in nature and may include marital problems, financial or emotional problems; family issues; or substance or alcohol misuse.

Renaisense partners with small and large corporate organisations – through Employee Assistance Programmes – from all sectors of the economy including mining, telecommunications, banking, manufacturing, agriculture, Government and Non-Governmental organisations among others.

Through these partnerships, Renaisense is able to support individual members of staff as well as business units and/or all staff.

Further, Renaisense conducts psychological assessments designed to address any one of the numerous issues such as stress, work-life balance, awareness, etc. These assessments provide greater insight into issues faced by the employee and allows Renaisense to design an appropriate and effective intervention.

Training & Development

As Renaisense seeks to transform the landscape of mental health in Southern Africa, the development of qualified and skilled mental health practitioners is evidently key to this ambition.

Renaisense has over the last few years developed training programmes and short courses for individuals and groups serving their communities at different levels. Our flagship programme – The Equipped-To-Care – targets lay counsellors who on a day-to-day basis seek to help individuals and communities around them but lack the necessary tools to help effectively. The course equips these lay counsellors with very valuable skills and tools derived from scientific approaches used over decades in the practice of psychology and psychotherapy.

Other courses are designed for qualified practitioners and are meant to grow their skills and knowledge within a facet of practice.
