KEYNOTE

Prof. Chiwoza Bandawe
Chiwoza Bandawe is Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Mental Health at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi. He is a Clinical Psychologist who has also lectured at the University of Cape Town. Prof. Bandawe is an accomplished academic with numerous academic publications as well as active participation in research collaborations. He is the Malawi Lead in the African Mental Health Research Initiative; a multinational capacity building programme which trains the continents’ future mental health leaders. He also served as Editor of the Malawi Medical Journal, an internationally accredited academic journal.
As a practicing psychologist, he opened his own clinic: Harmony Mental Wellness Solutions in Blantyre, Malawi. He has published three mental health education books: Mind Tips: A Psychology of Practical Living Skills for Malawi (2005), Mind Tools to Sharpen Your Mental Health (2006) and Practical uMunthu Psychology (2010). Prof Bandawe has a regular column in the Malawi Weekend Nation newspaper which seeks to promote mental health literacy and has given numerous mental health talks to local and international conferences, youth groups, organisations and churches.

Mr Roland Evans
Couple counselling with a focus on gender based violence.
Roland Evans is a psychologist, writer and teacher born in Boulder, Colorado, USA. He attended the University of Edinburgh and the University of Pennsylvania before training as a clinical psychologist with the NHS in London. Roland was an Adjunct Professor at Naropa University for 16 years where he taught courses on psychotherapy, group dynamics and professional development.
His publications include, Seeking Wholeness: Insights into the Mystery of Experience (2001) and “Spirituality and Relationship in Later Life” in Jung and Aging (2014). In addition to his psychotherapy and teaching practice, he provides coaching and consultation to non-profits.

Dr Naeem Dalal
Psychological First Aid
Dr. Dalal Naeem is a global mental health specialist affiliated on boards and advisories spearheading policies and strengthening mental health services. He is leading grassroots to system level change around preventive health. He has a track record of impact as a Zambian mental health specialist, psychiatrist at University Teaching Hospitals, and public health chairperson of the Zambia Medical Association.
He is currently affiliated with the Zambia National Public Health institute as the Mental Health Specialist on the COVID-19 World Bank project. He is currently serving as an interim board member of the Healthy Global Brain Initiative whose mission is to improve the lives of people affected by neurological and mental health problems by incorporating lived experience and driving a new global model of collaborative research. He is also one of 10 leading consultants supporting the Africa CDC.

Dr Didduh Mubanga

Didduh Mubanga is a Lecturer and Researcher with vast experience of teaching and clinical work in both public and private institutions. She holds a PhD in Public Health (Mental Health), Masters in Education for Primary Health Care, Degree in Clinical Medicine (Mental Health) and Diploma in Clinical Medicine.
Didduh envisions a community where anyone with mental health problems can easily access help and have quality life. Hence, she is part of a team of professionals that build capacities in healthcare workers on identification and management health problems. Didduh has research interest in mental health, young people and mental health services.

Ms Maryke Smulders
Modern School Bullying
Maryke Smulders is a Social worker and Child therapist and has been providing mental health and psychosocial support services to vulnerable children and families for more than 7 years. In 2021, she moved to Zambia and joined the Renaisense team as a Child therapist where she works with children aged 4-18 years old who experience social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Maryke offers play therapy, counselling, parenting support, remedial therapy (Wise Eye Reading programme) and the 7ROSES empowerment programme for adults.
Prior to joining the Renaisense team, Maryke has worked in South Africa and the Netherlands for NGO’s and in private practice. She is passionate about community-based programmes and has been an active volunteer for Tjeko -Uganda and Tehila-Zambia where she has been involved in training of trainers, programme development and capacity building.

Dr Brian Maila
Management of Delirium Tremens
Dr. Brian Maila, a psychiatrist, educator, and health researcher holds a Bachelor of Human Biology, Bachelor of Medicine, and Surgery from the University of Zambia as well as a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry from the same university. He also holds a Certificate in Mental Health Care in A Public Health Context from Queensland University of Technology. He is also a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow for the 2021/2022 academic year in the field of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, Education, Research and Policy.
Dr. Brian Maila is passionate about the public health approach to mental health and Substance Use Disorders, so he works with faith-based organizations, Nongovernmental Organizations, and government agencies. He also volunteers as a peer reviewer of some international journals to contribute to the quality of published health research.

Dr Sultana Yasmin
Mindfulness
Dr. Yasmin Sultana-Muchindu earned her Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Psychology and has worked in Zambia since 2010. Currently, she serves as the Head of the Department for Doctoral Studies at the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) and also lectures courses in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at the same University.
She has over ten years of experience in teaching, research and practicing psychotherapy. She has authored books, journal articles and has presented her research findings, lectures, topical discussions on both national and international platforms.

Kapalu Mutenda
Master of Ceremony
Kapalu Mutenda runs a content management company that works with a variety of companies and associations on a range of consumer education and marketing campaigns. A seasoned public speaker, Kapalu also works as a public speaking and presentation coach. He has directed programs for a range of corporate and private events. An advocate of mental health awareness, Kapalu has served as master of ceremony for the Mental Health Conference on three previous occasions. A role in which he had previously excelled.
